Nutrition for Wellness

“Our food should be our medicine and our medicine should be our food.”

- Hippocrates

Seems so simple doesn’t it? And it may have been during Hippocrates’s time. But today we live in a world with lots of different opinions about food.

“Eat less saturated fat to lower your cholesterol.”
“Fat isn’t that important, it’s sugar that you have to cut back on.”

“It’s important to always eat breakfast.”
”Intermittent fasting is the way to lose weight.”

So what’s the truth? What is the best way to eat for your health and waist?

The truth is that there is no one best way for everyone, regardless of what all diet gurus say. Let’s start off with what most experts agree on. Eat fewer processed foods (especially those that contain sugar), eat smaller portions and eat lots of fibre rich and colourful vegetables. After that, the advice gets more varied. In general, fatty fish are high in omega 3s and have many health benefits while red meat is high in saturated fat and should be limited.

One of the most important steps to eating well is to choose things that are closest to their whole form - legumes, vegetables, fruits, eggs, brown rice, whole grains, dairy, meat, chicken and fish. Making sure you eat enough fibre can help to prevent certain cancers. Making sure you eat enough protein can help you hold on to muscle mass and age better.
