How to increase your metabolic rate by 50%
Thursday, November 6th, 2008According to researchers at Yale University, people who run at least 4 hours per week not only burn oodles of calories while exercising, they also burn 50% more while sitting still.
When the body is pushed via vigorous exercise, it needs to adapt to be able to meet the energy demands of an intense activity such as running. It does this by increasing the number of mitochondria (’energy powerhouses’) in each of its cells. These extra mitochondria then burn more energy all of the time.
So what does this mean for the average person? If you have no medical conditions, consider taking up a sport like running or cycling to raise your metabolic rate. This way, you will burn more calories 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
If you have any conditions like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, make sure you get a check-up from your doctor before starting any vigorous exercise program.
