Why trans-fat free foods may cause weight gain
Friday, July 25th, 2008Today, California became the first state to ban trans fat in restaurant foods. While this is a great step, in reality, most big restaurant chains such as McDonalds, Wendy’s, KFC, Taco Bell and Burger King had already intended on being trans fat free by the end of 2008 because of previously passed laws in places such as New York City.
Besides, there has already been a movement away from trans fats. Most manufacturers of high fat products such chips, cookies and crackers have already started moving away from hydrogenated oils.
These same food manufacturers are now replacing these trans fats with oils such as palm oil. While these are healthier than the hydrogenated products they were using, these oils are still high in calories which can lead to weight gain. And they are high in saturated fats, which cause heart disease according to most experts.
Besides being high in saturated fats, these foods contain minimal micronutrients and are high in salt and processed carbs (white flour, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, etc). They cause increased cravings and are so easy to overeat. If you want to lose weight, it is still a good idea to avoid highly processed and fast foods as much as possible.
