Whole Grains Good For Your Heart
Sunday, February 26th, 2006A new study has added proof that whole grains, bran and cereal fiber are good for your heart. In a study published in the February 2006 issue of Diabetes Care, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health found that women who ate more whole grains, bran, and cereal fiber tended to have lower levels of two markers that have been linked to heart disease.
The two indicators, C reactive protein and tumor necrosis factor alpha R2 were much lower in the women who ate the most whole grains as well as the lowest glycemic index foods.
What does this mean? These substances point out the degree of inflammation in the body (including the heart and blood vessels). The less the inflammation, the lower the chance of heart disease. While this study only looked at women with diabetes, the data will most likely apply to diabetic men and may apply to people who do not have diabetes.
Just another reason for all of us to eat more whole grain and bran products. Don’t forget the vegetables and fruits. If you are diabetic, follow the advice of your nutritionist or doctor if you want to increase your intake of any food (especially fruits).
